Overall in Professional Writing

This year, we have the good fortune of offering a third $5,000 scholarship for a Professional Writing undergraduate major in either specialty. The winner will be chosen from among all applicants for Writing & Publishing and Technical Writing awards. Follow the instructions for either award above.

Internship Scholarship in Academic Publishing

The Professional Writing Program offers one scholarship of $2,500 to provide a Professional Writing undergraduate major the opportunity to help support academic publishing, either producing an academic journal, to support editing of an academic book series, to develop and maintain digital content for an academic organization, and/or to provide support for digital and social media for a scholarly and/or academic organization. Specific duties will be discussed at the time of award and students should address experiences relevant to academic publishing in their letter of application. Students from both tracks of the Professional Writing major—Writing & Publishing and Technical Writing—are eligible for the award.

This scholarship, funded by a generous endowment from William H. and Ruth E. Crouse, is designed to support students of exceptional ability and promise as they gain experience in current activities common in academic publishing.

Students may also be awarded course credit (e.g., ENGL 589, 590, or equivalent) depending on the number of hours worked. Applications are judged by a committee composed of faculty in Professional Writing at Purdue as well as professionals in the publishing industry. Applicants for the award are evaluated on the basis of academic achievement and potential, an application letter, a resume, and a portfolio of work.

To apply for the award, submit one copy of the following materials:

  • an application letter that specifies which scholarship you have applied for and that discusses your career goals
  • an unofficial transcript
  • a resume
  • a portfolio containing two samples of writing, editorial work, or other work indicating achievement as a professional writer

Study Abroad

In addition, the Professional Writing program is offering up to three (3) Crouse Scholarships in support of study abroad in the amount of $1000 to participate in an approved study abroad program administered through Purdue University. Submit a letter of application with the name of the study abroad program and its registration number (e.g., SA#100100) along with an explanation for how the study abroad program supports the student’s career goals and/or learning objectives. Preference will be given to applications with clearly articulated rationale for its value as a part of the preparation of a professional writing student.
