Description of Crouse Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

These scholarships, funded by a generous endowment from William H. and Ruth E. Crouse, are designed to support students of exceptional ability and promise as they gain experience in publishing and tecnical writing.

Writing and Publishing Award

The Professional Writing Program offers a $5,000 scholarship for a Professional Writing undergraduate major specializing in Writing and Publishing.

This scholarship, funded by a generous endowment from William H. and Ruth E. Crouse, is designed to support students of exceptional ability and promise as they complete their coursework in the Writing and Publishing track of the major.

Applications for the award are judged by a committee composed of faculty in Professional Writing at Purdue as well as professionals in the field. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of academic achievement, an application letter, a resume, and portfolio of work.

To apply for the award, submit one copy of the following materials:

  • an application letter that specifies which scholarship you have applied for and that discusses your accomplishments and career goals
  • an unofficial transcript
  • a resume
  • a portfolio containing two samples of your work in writing and publishing

Technical Writing Award

Applications for the award are judged by a committee composed of faculty in Professional Writing at Purdue as well as professionals in the field. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of academic achievement, an application letter, a resume, and a writing portfolio.

Overall Award in Professional Writing

This year, we have the good fortune of offering a third $5,000 scholarship for a Professional Writing undergraduate major in either specialty. The winner will be chosen from among all applicants for Writing & Publishing and Technical Writing awards. Follow the instructions for either award above.

Study Abroad

In addition, the Professional Writing program is offering up to four (4) Crouse Scholarships in support of study abroad in the amount of $1000 to participate in an approved study abroad program administered through Purdue University. Submit a letter of application with the name of the study abroad program and its registration number (e.g., SA#100100) along with an explanation for how the study abroad program supports the student’s career goals and/or learning objectives. Preference will be given to applications with clearly articulated rationale for its value as a part of the preparation of a professional writing student.

  • In 2015, awardees were Shelby Oyer (Writing & Publishing), Brooke Halteman (Technical Writing), and Tanner Heffner (PW/Writing Lab Liaison)

Submission Instructions

Students may apply for multiple awards, but are asked to create individual applications and letters for each award. Preference will be given to those who have not received previous Crouse awards. For each scholarship applied, please submit your application as a single PDF document to Joy Kane jakane@purdue.edu with the subject line: Crouse 2020: Award Title, where you fill in the name of the award. Paper applications are not accepted.
